Remarks by Spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in Latvia on China-related issues in the Foreign Policy Report of the Latvian Government
2021-12-30 12:00

We have noted that the Latvian Foreign Ministry recently released the Foreign Policy Report of 2021, which touched on China-Europe relations, China-Latvia relations and other issues. I would like to reiterate the following principles and positions:

China always views its relations with Europe from a strategic perspective, believes that cooperation is the general direction and keynote of China-Europe relations and regards Europe as a partner rather than a rival. We should seriously consider current difficulties met in China-Europe relations, and adopt a right approach to carry out constructive dialogue, enhance mutual understanding, clear doubts and misunderstandings, build up common grounds, focus on mutually-beneficial cooperation under the premise of respecting basic facts, so as to promote the sound and steady development of China-Europe relations.

Since the establishment of the bilateral diplomatic relations 30 years ago, and with the joint efforts made by both sides, China-Latvia relations have made steady progress and in-depth exchanges and cooperation in various fields have been increasing. China stands ready to work with Latvia, on the basis of mutual respect, equal treatment and mutual benefit, to enhance communication and deepen mutually beneficial cooperation with a view to injecting positive energy into bilateral relations, China-CEEC cooperation and China-Europe relations.

Taiwan is an inalienable part of China and the Taiwan question is entirely China's internal affair. For some time, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities in Taiwan have been making provocations for "Taiwan independence" in collusion with external forces, which is the root cause of the current tension and turbulence across the Taiwan Straits. Achieving China’s complete reunification is an aspiration shared by all sons and daughters of the Chinese nation. We have patience and will strive for the prospect of peaceful reunification with utmost sincerity and efforts. However, should the separatist forces for "Taiwan independence" provoke us, force our hands or even cross the red line, we will be compelled to take resolute measures. China has strong resolve, firm will and strong capability to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

China has always been a builder of world peace, a contributor to global development and a defender of the international order, and has always participated in and handled international affairs in a responsible way. China firmly opposes and combats all forms of cyber attacks in accordance with the law. Guided by the principle of extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits, China has carried out practical cooperation with other parties in various fields, including 5G, and is committed to maintaining peace and stability in the South China Sea and other regions. The claims in the Foreign Policy Report that China "deploy information manipulation operations", "linked to a number of abusive cyber activities" and "posing risks to stability in the region" are absolutely groundless.
