2010-12-22 20:56
On December 20, 2010, the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Latvia and Riga Secondary Cultural School held a new year party at the Embassy. The main theme of the party is learning to cook the Chinese food. Some 40 students and teachers of Riga Secondary Cultural School attended the party.

Ambassador Hu Yeshun expressed his warm welcome to the students and teachers and wished them merry Christmas and happy new year. He pointed out that the party would be a very special class for those students in their process of learning the Chinese language. He wished that the participants of this party would have a direct and in-depth understanding of the Chinese cultures and traditions through learning to cook the Chinese food, sing the Chinese songs etc. so as to arouse deeper interest in learning the Chinese. The students learned to make spring roles, played games, and sang songs in Chinese together with the Embassy staff. The performance of Taiji Fan titled as the Chinese Gongfu by some members of the Female Group of the Embassy brought the party to the climax. At the end of the party, the students and teachers tasted some Chinese food including the spring roles made by themselves, prepared by the Embassy chef. The Embassy also presented the students some key chains, brooches and post cards etc. with the design of rabbits as gifts. The students gained more knowledge and meaning of the traditional Chinese Sheng Xiao ( any of the twelve animals such as rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and pig, representing the twelve Earthly Branches, used to symbolize the year in which a person is born) while receiving the gifts with pleasant surprise.

Riga Secondary Cultural School has more than 500 students and is one of the earliest middle schools in Latvia opened the Chinese teaching curriculum. Currently, about 50 students of the school are learning the Chinese language and some of them scored excellent achievements in the Chinese Bridge Contests organized by the Chinese Embassy.
