Unveiling Ceremony of the Confucius Institute Of University of Latvia Held

           On Nov 4, 2011, the inauguration ceremony of the Confucius Institute of University of Latvia was held in the University of Latvia. H.E. Roberts Ķīlis, Minister of Education and Science of Latvia, H.E. Hu Yeshun, the Chinese ambassador to Latvia, H.E. Janis Mazeiks, Director General of Economic and Bilateral Relations Directorate of Foreign Ministry of Latvia, H.E. Mārcis Auziņš, Rector of the University of Latvia, H.E. Guo Jie, Vice President of South China Normal University, H.E. Peteris Pildegovics, Dean of the Confucius Institute of University of Latvia etc., teachers and students from several Latvian universities and schools, overseas Chinese, representatives of the Chinese companies and press, Latvian friends from all sectors of the society, altogether 100 people, attended the ceremony.
      Minister Ķīlis said in his speech the inauguration of the Confucius Institute at the University of Latvia was a joyful event for Latvian students, which showed the great influence of Chinese culture on the world, especially on Latvia. The inauguration of the Confucius Institute would further promote exchanges and cooperation in education, culture and other sectors between China and Latvia.
      Ambassador Hu Yeshun remarked that the inauguration of the Confucius Institute of University of Latvia represented a significant event in the history of education exchange between the two sides. Also, it was an important achievement for the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic ties between China and Latvia. The Confucius Institute will serve as a palace of impacting knowledge and enhancing friendship. In a rapidly changing world, we can still absorb nutrition from the profound thoughts of Confucius, the great ancient Chinese educator, philosopher and politician, with which we can together promote the construction of a harmonious world. The Ambassador wishes that the Confucius Institute of University of Latvia, with great ambition and long perspective, would be nation-wide oriented one and a bridge of enhancing understanding and cooperation between the two peoples.
      Director General Mazeiks, Rector Auziņš, Vice President Guo Jie and Dean Pildegovics also respectively addressed on the ceremony. It is hoped that through the platform of the Confucius institute of University of Latvia, we could deepen the bilateral exchanges in education, culture and other sectors and cast luster on cooperation and friendship between our two countries.
